The Silver Paw Prints
Who was tiptoeing across the porch at midnight — leaving footprints made of SILVER?

Who was tiptoeing across the porch at midnight — leaving footprints made of SILVER?
Atharva woke first. In the moonlight on the porch boards, a trail of tiny paw prints sparkled like spilled stars, leading toward the garden.
Ashi: "Are those made of moonbeams?"
Atharva: "Only one way to find out. Grab your slippers — quietly!"
Mama: "Stay where I can see you, explorers."
The trail glittered past the rosebush and stopped at the old watering can.
Something was rustling underneath — snuffle, snuffle, snort!
Atharva lifted the flashlight. Two bright eyes blinked back, and a round little nose twitched. A hedgehog! Silver threads were tangled all around his tiny paws — that was the mystery of the silver prints!
Ashi: "He's wearing sparkly shoes!"
The little hedgehog curled into a tight, prickly ball.
The little ball trembled. The hedgehog was frightened.
Atharva: "Don't touch his spikes, Ashi. Let's just sit quietly and let him feel safe."
So the brothers sat on the cool grass and hummed the soft song Mama always sang at bedtime.
Slowly — very slowly — one tiny nose peeked out. Then two bright eyes. Then a whole round hedgehog face.
Ashi: "He's smiling!"
The hedgehog uncurled and waddled one brave step closer.
But with every step, the silver threads pulled tighter around his paws.
Atharva: "He's caught in tinsel from the garden fence! We have to help him."
Ashi ran to fetch Papa, who came with the flashlight and the tiny sewing scissors.
Papa: "Hold the light steady, boys. Gentle now — snip, snip."
One thread, two threads — the last silver tangle fell away. The hedgehog shook his paws and did a happy little hedgehog dance!
Free at last, the hedgehog waddled to the hollow log by the fence and squeaked — eek-eek!
Out tumbled three baby hedgehogs, no bigger than walnuts, squeaking with joy.
Ashi: "He has babies!"
Atharva: "And look — he was carrying this for them."
Inside the den glinted a shiny bottle cap, the shiniest treasure in the whole garden. He had tangled himself in the tinsel bringing a present home to his babies.
The brothers tiptoed to the kitchen and filled a saucer with water.
Mama: "Hedgehogs love a drink after a big adventure. And a few apple slices too."
They set the saucer beside the log. Slurp, slurp, crunch — the whole hedgehog family feasted, and the babies' tiny tummies went round as marbles.
The big hedgehog looked up at the boys and bobbed his head, as if to say thank you.
Ashi: "You're welcome, Prickles."
The next morning, on the porch step where the silver prints had started, lay a gift: a smooth pebble, perfectly round, with one silver tinsel thread tied around it like a ribbon.
Atharva: "It's from Prickles!"
Ashi: "The mystery wasn't scary at all. It was just a daddy bringing his babies something shiny."
Atharva tucked the pebble into his treasure box, right beside the golden acorn from Nibble the mouse.
