The Blue Lantern in the Garden Shed
What was a tiny blue lantern doing glowing in the garden shed, when nobody had lit it at all?

What was a tiny blue lantern doing glowing in the garden shed, when nobody had lit it at all? Atharva and Ashi had just gone to fetch Papa's watering can when they saw it, a soft blue glow, shining through the shed's dusty window in the evening light.
Ashi: "It is glowing all by itself!"
Atharva: "And nobody is in there to light it!"
Very slowly, so as not to frighten it, Atharva pushed the shed door open just a crack. There on the old wooden shelf sat the little lantern, and inside its glass glowed a tiny firefly, no bigger than a pea, shining soft blue instead of gold.
Ashi: "Why is he blue?"
Atharva: "Maybe blue is the color of being lost."
The little firefly blinked up at them, and in the tiniest voice, like a bell far away, he told them his name was Flick. A gust of wind had blown him off course on his way home, and now the garden looked big and dark and strange.
Flick: "I am too scared to fly."
Ashi: "Then we will help you find your way."
So the brothers carried the lantern ever so gently through the garden, calling softly for Flick's family. They passed the old oak tree and the sleepy flower beds, but no answering twinkle came back through the dark.
Atharva: "Do not worry, Flick."
Ashi: "We will keep your light safe."
Then Ashi had an idea. He whispered to Flick that brave does not mean never feeling scared, it means trying one tiny flutter anyway. Flick took a deep little breath and fluttered his wings, and his light glowed a little brighter.
Flick: "I did it!"
Ashi: "See? Your light grows when you are brave!"
At last they reached the far garden fence, and beyond it the night was twinkling! A whole cloud of fireflies danced over the meadow, and one big bright one flashed three times, pause, three times again. The brothers held their breath and watched the meadow sparkle like a birthday sky.
Flick: "That is Mama!"
Atharva: "Flash back, Flick. Flash back!"
Mama Firefly swept Flick into a hug, and the whole family lit up the meadow, gold and blue, like a sky full of tiny stars come down to dance. They thanked the brothers a hundred twinkling times, and Flick left his little blue glow in the lantern, so it would shine in the shed every night.
Flick: "Now you will never be lost in the dark."
Ashi: "And neither will you!"
And that is tonight's secret: when someone feels lost and afraid in the dark, your kindness can be the light that shows them home, and a light shared with a friend shines brighter for everyone. So if you ever meet someone who is scared, be their little lantern.
But wait, what is that tiny silver bell tinkling in the old oak tree at bedtime, when there is no wind at all? Tune in tomorrow for another adventure! Good night, sleep tight. And keep learning, and subscribe to A two Quest dot com.
