The Mitten with No Match
How do you solve the mystery of a mitten with no match, when there is not a single other red mitten anywhere on Maple Street?

How do you solve the mystery of a mitten with no match, when there is not a single other red mitten anywhere on Maple Street? This morning, Atharva found a lonely red mitten sitting right on their front step. Ashi picked it up. It was soft and warm, and it smelled faintly of cinnamon. But whose was it? Nobody on the whole street wore red mittens. Not one single person.
Ashi slipped it on his hand, and it was far too big. A grown-up's mitten! So the brothers became detectives and marched down Maple Street, knocking on doors. Missus Hart peeked out, her knitting needles clicking.
Missus Hart: "My mittens are blue, dears," (holding up her own pair)
At Mister Thompson's house, Biscuit the dog sniffed the mitten and sneezed three times.
Mister Thompson: "Brown work gloves," (chuckling)
Mister Thompson: "Not mine."
Sam's house was next, but both his green mittens were sitting by his door. And Lily's mittens hung together on their little string, safe and sound. The cold wind tugged at the boys' jackets. Ashi rubbed his hands.
Atharva: "Somewhere out there," (softly)
Atharva: "somebody has one very cold hand tonight."
Nobody claimed the mitten. So the brothers carried it home, wondering what to do with one lonely mitten.
That evening, the brothers sat by the warm window and looked at the red mitten.
Ashi: "It's no good as a mitten," (sighing)
Ashi: "without its match."
But then Atharva got a twinkly idea.
Atharva: "Maybe it doesn't have to be a mitten anymore!"
Ashi's eyes went wide.
Ashi: "You mean we can give it a new job?"
The lonely mitten wasn't lost anymore. It was waiting to become something wonderful.
Ashi remembered how Mister Calloway's old hands trembled in the chilly blue house when he played the piano.
Ashi: "Let's make it a hand-warmer!" (whispering)
Mama helped them fill the mitten with warm dried lavender from Missus Hart's garden. They stitched the top closed with red thread, and the whole kitchen smelled like a summer field. It was soft. It was warm. It was ready for its brand-new job.
They knocked on the blue house door, and Mister Calloway opened it, humming his happy song.
Ashi: "For your piano hands,"
Ashi: "so they stay warm."
The old teacher pressed the lavender mitten to his cheek and smiled the biggest smile. Then he sat at his piano and played them the warmest, sweetest tune, a thank-you song just for the two kindest detectives on Maple Street.
The next morning, knock, knock! On their front step sat a small brown parcel. Inside was the mitten's match! And a note in neat, careful handwriting:
Atharva: "I found this by Willow Creek days ago, waiting for its pair. You gave mine a new job, so here is its match, for two warm hearts. Your friend, C." (reading the note aloud) The pair was together again. And nobody had a cold hand anymore.
And the brothers learned something wonderful. When something seems lost or useless, a little imagination can turn it into something brand new. A lonely mitten became a hand-warmer, a thank-you song, and warm hearts everywhere. But that night, as they hung the reunited mittens by the door, they heard a soft tapping at the kitchen window, and two bright eyes were blinking back at them in the dark!
