The Mystery of Mill Pond
What was leaving mysterious ripples on the old mill pond?

What was leaving mysterious ripples on the old mill pond? That question was bouncing around in Atharva and Ashi's heads as they walked down the dusty path to the pond at sunset. Ring after ring spread across the water, like someone was drawing invisible circles. But whenever the brothers looked closely, the pond seemed completely empty. Very, very strange.
Atharva: "Let's just sit here and watch," (whispering, settling onto the soft grass bank)
Ashi wanted to poke the water with a stick, but his big brother shook his head.
Atharva: "If we splash around, we'll never find out,"
So the boys sat very still and quiet. A frog plopped onto a lily pad. A dragonfly zipped past Ashi's nose. Still, nothing showed itself.
Just when Ashi's legs started getting wiggly, the reeds at the far end of the pond began to tremble. Out swam a mommy duck with four tiny yellow ducklings paddling in a wobbly line behind her! The brothers' eyes went wide. It was the ducklings' little feet that had been making all those mysterious ripples. Ashi squeezed Atharva's hand.
Ashi: "We found them," (breathing)
But something was wrong. The smallest duckling was stuck! Its tiny foot was tangled in the reeds, and it peeped and peeped in a frightened little voice. The mommy duck swam back and forth, quacking anxiously, not knowing how to help her baby. Ashi jumped up.
Ashi: "We have to save him!" (crying)
Atharva grabbed his sleeve.
Atharva: "Wait," (gently)
Atharva: "Slow and gentle, so we don't scare them."
The brothers crept to the edge of the pond and sat down again, as still as two statues. They waited patiently while the mommy duck watched them with worried eyes. Slowly, slowly, she stopped quacking. Then Atharva reached out a long, smooth stick and gently pushed the reeds apart. Ashi held his breath. One more little nudge, and the tiny foot slipped free!
The little duckling gave a happy peep and splashed straight to its mommy! The mommy duck quacked three times, loud and joyful, as if she were saying thank you. Then all four ducklings lined up behind her and paddled in a perfect parade across the golden water. The brothers cheered softly, careful not to make a single splash. They had done it.
As the sun melted into the pond like orange honey, the duck family swam toward the far reeds. The smallest duckling turned around and peeped one last goodbye. Atharva and Ashi waved from the bank until the last ripple faded away.
Ashi: "That was better than any treasure hunt," (sleepily)
And Atharva smiled. Waiting was the best part of all.
And so Atharva and Ashi learned that good things come to those who wait. Because they sat still and stayed patient instead of splashing around, they discovered the duck family and saved the littlest duckling. Remember, little ones: patience makes wonderful things happen. Tomorrow night, the brothers find a lost kite tangled in the tallest pine tree! Good night, sleep tight. And keep learning, and subscribe to A two Quest dot com.
