The Giant Pumpkin of Maple Street
What do you do when you wake up and find a PUMPKIN in your garden?

What do you do when you wake up and find a PUMPKIN in your garden... that is bigger than your dog? That is exactly what happened on Maple Street this morning. Missus Hart called the brothers at once.
Missus Hart: "Atharva! Ashi! Come quick!"
When they pushed open her garden gate, their mouths fell open. Right there in the morning sun sat the biggest pumpkin anyone had ever seen. And last night, it was not there at all.
Three weeks ago, the boys had planted pumpkin seeds with Missus Hart, right after the adventure of the wandering gnomes. Every single evening, Atharva and Ashi took turns carrying the watering can from the rain barrel to the garden bed. Atharva measured the vine with a ribbon, marking how far it stretched each day. And Ashi sang it a sleepy little goodnight song, because even pumpkins, he said, like to be tucked in.
But yesterday evening, there was no pumpkin. Not even a tiny one. The vine had one little orange flower, and that was all. Ashi stared at the flower and sighed.
Ashi: "Maybe our pumpkin will not grow," (whispering)
Atharva put an arm around his little brother.
Atharva: "We watered it, and we loved it, and we did our best,"
Atharva: "Whatever grows, we will be thankful for it."
This morning, everything had changed. Overnight, the vine had exploded with green, and right in the middle sat a pumpkin the size of a beanbag chair, glowing golden in the sun.
Missus Hart: "How?" (whispering, pressing her hands to her cheeks)
Nobody could explain it. Not the rain. Not the moon.
Missus Hart: "Maybe," (softly)
Missus Hart: "the garden was simply saying thank you for all our care."
Just then, Sam, the shy new neighbor, peeked through the garden gate with Biscuit, the golden retriever, bouncing beside him. Sam's eyes grew as round as the pumpkin itself.
Sam: "It is bigger than Biscuit!" (giggling)
Missus Hart looked at the giant pumpkin, then at all their smiling faces, and clapped her hands.
Missus Hart: "A pumpkin this big cannot belong to just one family,"
Missus Hart: "It must say thank you to everyone!"
So they made a thank-you plan. Missus Hart baked golden pumpkin pies for Mister Thompson, whose compost had fed the vine. She wrapped warm pumpkin bread for Sam's mother. Ashi poured the crunchy roasted seeds into little paper bags for his school snack table. And Atharva carved the biggest jack-o'-lantern on Maple Street, to light up the sidewalk for everyone at the fall fair.
That evening, the whole street glowed. The giant jack-o'-lantern grinned from Missus Hart's porch while children crunched roasted seeds and neighbors shared warm pie under string lights. Mister Thompson took a bite and closed his eyes.
Mister Thompson: "Best pumpkin on the street," (declaring)
Missus Hart hugged both brothers tight.
Missus Hart: "This is the finest pumpkin I ever grew," (whispering)
Missus Hart: "because I grew it with you."
And so Atharva and Ashi learned that gratitude is like a pumpkin seed. Plant a little thank-you, water it with love, and it grows into something enormous. Say thank you for the little things, and give back whenever you can. Tomorrow night, the brothers follow the sound of tiny silver bells and discover the secret of Missus Hart's new wind chimes that ring when there is no wind at all! Good night, sleep tight.
