The Bottle in Willow Creek
What secret was rolling around inside the glass bottle that came bobbing toward them in Willow Creek?

What secret was rolling around inside the glass bottle that came bobbing toward them in Willow Creek? One golden October evening, Atharva and Ashi raced down to the water to skip one last stone. But something green and glinting floated past instead. Ashi fished it out with a long stick. It was a glass bottle, corked tight, with a rolled-up letter inside tied with a red ribbon.
Ashi's eyes went huge.
Ashi: "Open it! Open it!" (shaking the bottle)
Atharva held it up to the sun. A few faded words showed through the green glass: a wish for Grandma Rose. The wax seal looked as important as a king's.
Atharva: "If it were YOUR letter," (slowly)
Atharva: "would you want a stranger to peek?"
Ashi stopped shaking the bottle.
The brothers remembered Mama Mouse's letter with the golden stamp. They had carried it all the way across Willow Creek in a wax-paper boat, and they had not opened it even once.
Atharva: "A secret someone writes is a gift,"
Atharva: "not a toy."
Ashi nodded very solemnly and hugged the bottle to his chest like it was made of moonlight.
But who was Grandma Rose? They asked Missus Hart on her porch, and she clapped her hands.
Missus Hart: "Rose Alder!"
Missus Hart: "She lives in the little blue cottage past the mill pond, and her birthday is this Sunday! Her granddaughter Lucy moved to the city this spring and misses her something awful."
Atharva and Ashi looked at each other. The bottle was a wish.
So they carried the bottle up the winding path past the mill pond, where the ducks quacked hello, and across the meadow, where Pearl the silver dove circled above them like a guardian. Ashi walked the whole way on tiptoe, holding the bottle with both hands.
Ashi: "Careful, careful," (whispering to it)
Ashi: "you are somebody's birthday wish."
At the blue cottage door, an old lady with kind wrinkles and flour on her apron answered. Grandma Rose broke the seal herself and read the letter aloud.
Grandma Rose: "Dear Grandma, I miss you. My train comes Sunday for your birthday cake, but I could not wait to say it. I love you. Love, Lucy." (reading the letter aloud)
Grandma Rose's eyes filled with happy tears, and she hugged the letter like a blanket.
Grandma Rose: "You didn't peek, did you?" (with a twinkle)
Ashi: "Not even once!" (proudly)
She gave them warm apple cider and two ginger cookies shaped like stars.
Grandma Rose: "The best wish is one that travels safely."
Walking home under the pink sunset, Atharva put his arm around Ashi.
Atharva: "We delivered a whole heart today," (whispering)
So remember this, little one: when you find someone's secret, don't peek. Carry it gently, like it is made of moonlight. A kept secret is a kept promise, and it makes two hearts happy.
