The Blue House on Maple Street
What was that humming coming from the empty blue house?

What was that humming coming from the empty blue house? The old blue house at the end of Maple Street had been empty for years — its windows dark, its porch quiet. But tonight, as Atharva and Ashi walked past, a friendly humming floated out of an open window, like a song that was happy to be home. Who could possibly be living there?
The next morning, the brothers peeked through the blue house's picket fence. On the porch sat an old man with silver hair, humming softly while he tuned a battered brown violin.
Missus Hart: "That's Mister Calloway," (watering her roses nearby)
Missus Hart: "He moved in just yesterday — a retired music teacher. But he seems far too shy to knock on anyone's door."
All morning, Atharva and Ashi watched from behind the rose bushes. Mister Calloway hummed while he swept the porch. He hummed while he planted bright flowers. But whenever someone walked past the gate, the humming stopped — and he quickly looked down at his shoes.
Ashi: "His humming sounds like it's waiting for a friend," (whispering)
That afternoon, the boys remembered Lily's painted kindness stones. They picked the sunniest one — a big smiling yellow sun — and tiptoed up the blue house's front steps. Atharva's heart thumped like a drum as he lifted his hand. Knock, knock. The humming stopped at once. Slow footsteps shuffled closer… and the front door creaked open.
Ashi: "Hello!" (holding up the smiling-sun stone with both hands)
Ashi: "Welcome to Maple Street!"
Mister Calloway stared at the little stone — and then his whole face crinkled into the biggest, warmest smile.
Mister Calloway: "Well, butter my biscuit!" (his eyes shining)
Mister Calloway: "Nobody has welcomed me anywhere in twenty years. Come in, come in, my young friends!"
Inside, the blue house smelled of cinnamon and old storybooks. Mister Calloway lifted his battered violin and played the very tune he had been humming — a bouncy, twirly melody that made Ashi's toes tap all by themselves.
Mister Calloway: "That is my happy song," (with a twinkle)
Mister Calloway: "Every new beginning needs a happy song. Would you boys like to learn it?"
So Mister Calloway taught them the tune, note by note — and though Ashi's first tries sounded like a squeaky door, they all laughed until their bellies hurt. That evening, the blue house glowed warm and bright, with music spilling out of every window. An empty house had become a home — all because two little boys were brave enough to knock.
And that is tonight's story. Remember: a warm welcome can turn an empty house into a home, and a stranger into a friend. Tune in tomorrow night for another adventure with Atharva and Ashi… when a tiny paper boat with a glowing lantern drifts down Willow Creek — and nobody is there to have set it afloat. The lesson: a warm welcome can turn an empty house into a home, and a stranger into a friend.
